Discussions about the importance of body language

Body Language Workshop in Bern Social Zebras

Body language is over 80% of the messages we convey.

Using the face and eyes.

  • making eye contact - this conveys confidence and interest to the other side and is essential for creating a positive impact.
  • when you lock eyes, lower status person looks away first and looks down to break contact. you can break contact by looking sideways, which is neutral.
  • if its a woman and she looks away upwards then shes not interested, if she looks down then she's interested, and if she looks away sideways then its neutral.
  • Smiling is very powerful - it intimidates your opponents, it attracts the opposite sex, it shows you are confident and friendly.

  • push shoulders back for 20secs - this changes your state to a more positive one, internally to you and also externally.
  • slow movements and make them more purposeful - this conveys confidence and assurance and is one of the alpha male techniques
  • slow deep, breathing and focus on your breath to bring focus and calm your nervous. this allows you to slow your movements down and relax yourself. - can be done while walking - also called walking meditation.
  • while walking check yourself - eg. your breathing, pace, stride - to make sure its all in alignment with you as a person.
  • feet and legs are the furthest from your brain, and also the most accurate predictors of your intentions.
  • orientation of your hands - language of hands on tedtalks - used to emphasize your words. if having a picture taken while handshaking make the handshaking shoulder nearest the camera to give you the best angle.
  • clasping hands, and hugging yourself are defensive moves.
  • to fix your posture and back look at the alexandra technique and atlantotec treatment.
  • body language is very useful in all social interactions especially dating, sales and interviews.
  • when decoding body language try to take the context into account and not just look at it in isolation -eg. somebody hugging themselves could be they are cold and not defensive.
  • body language effects your emotions and moods so if you want to change those, then change your body language. eg. smiling will lift your mood. making yourself bigger will boost your confidence.
  • in NLP - mirroring body language is a powerful way to build rapport.
